Assistant Category Assistant– Convenience Retail Department:
Merchandising / Category Management Position Summary The Category
Assistant supports the planning, execution, and optimization of
assigned convenience store categories while developing the
analytical, strategic, and cross-functional skills required to
advance into a Category Manager role. This position blends data
analysis, vendor coordination, promotional execution, and
store-level support, serving as a critical training ground for
future category ownership. The ACM works closely with Category
Managers, vendors, operations, and supply chain partners to ensure
category strategies are executed accurately and effectively across
the store network. Key Responsibilities Category Support &
Execution Support day-to-day management of assigned categories,
including item maintenance, pricing updates, promotional execution,
and resets Assist in building and maintaining planograms,
assortments, and seasonal transitions Help execute new item
launches, including distribution lists, store communications, and
merchandising instructions Track category timelines and ensure
on-time execution of promotions, signage, and planogram changes
Data & Performance Analysis Pull and analyze sales, margin, unit,
and inventory data at category and item levels Prepare weekly and
period-end performance reports highlighting trends, risks, and
opportunities Support competitive price checks and basic market
analysis Assist in post-promotion analysis and recap reporting
Vendor & Broker Coordination Support vendor communications related
to item setup, pricing, funding, free fills, and merchandising
assets Track vendor commitments such as promotions, scanbacks,
signage support, or equipment Assist in preparation for vendor
meetings, including data summaries and follow-up action items
Promotions & Merchandising Build & maintain period promotional
calendar ensuring that it is completed before the deadline.
Coordinate with operations and field teams to support execution and
resolve store-level issues Create & Maintain each Period’s
Promotional Presentation. Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner
with operations and field leadership to address execution
challenges Collaborate with the accounting team on rebates and help
maintain internal rebate manager spreadsheet Support internal
reporting and presentations for leadership reviews Professional
Development & Readiness for Advancement Learn category strategy
fundamentals: pricing architecture, assortment optimization,
space-to-sales, and promotional ROI Take ownership of defined
sub-projects or limited category segments with increasing autonomy
Build the skills and judgment required to independently manage a
category over time Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree in
Business, Marketing, Supply Chain, Analytics, or related field (or
equivalent experience) 1–3 years of experience in merchandising,
category management, retail analytics, buying, or related roles
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret sales and
performance data Proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, lookups, basic
formulas) Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced retail
environment Clear written and verbal communication skills Preferred
Experience in convenience retail, grocery, or multi-unit retail
Exposure to planogram or space-planning tools Familiarity with POS
data, syndicated data, or internal reporting tools Experience
working with vendors or brokers
